The Afrikaans speech community is characterized by a long-standing rift between Whites and Coloureds, for large part bilingual, with English being increasingly integrated in its stylistic repertoire. Yet, the history of different across White/Coloured divide, as particular terms diffusion ideological associations. question we wish to ask twofold. First, how far may there be ethnic norms Afrikaans-English code-switching? Second, if code-switching are used differently negotiation White Coloured identities? This contribution organized three main parts. give an overview encountered Coloureds on basis corpus informal data. Then sequential patterns following CA methodology. Finally, determine help macrosocial knowledge these forms functions made relevant projection identities South Africa’s current post-Apartheid context select individual examples. results our analysis indicate that data displays features ‘mixed code’, which perceived ‘we-code’, where input tends stylistically neutral. By contrast, more syntactically sequentially salient data, visibly serves purposes identity-negotiation. Despite those differences, remains clear correlation both samples use monolingual code affiliation ‘New African values’.
